What It Means, Why It Happens, and What You Can Do
If you’re living with lipedema, you may have heard the term “venous insufficiency” tossed around during appointments or support group discussions. It sounds complicated — but understanding it can make a big difference in how you manage your symptoms and protect your long-term health.
Let’s break it down simply.
🩸 What Is Venous Insufficiency?
Your veins are like highways that carry blood back to your heart after it’s circulated through your body. They have little one-way valves that open to let blood flow upward (against gravity) and close to keep it from sliding back down.
When those valves weaken or stop working properly, blood can start to pool in the legs instead of moving efficiently toward the heart. This is called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
Over time, that backed-up blood increases pressure in the veins, leading to:
- Swelling (especially in the lower legs and ankles)
- A heavy, achy feeling in the legs
- Visible veins (spider or varicose veins)
- Skin changes or tenderness
- Fatigue and discomfort when standing for long periods
💜 How Venous Insufficiency Relates to Lipedema
Here’s where it gets interesting (and frustrating).
People with lipedema already experience swelling, tenderness, and circulation challenges due to abnormal fat buildup and impaired lymphatic flow. When venous insufficiency is added to the mix, those symptoms can become more pronounced and harder to manage.
Why the overlap?
- Increased pressure in the legs: Lipedema tissue can put extra strain on the veins, making it harder for blood to flow upward.
- Fluid retention: When lymphatic drainage slows down (as it often does with lipedema), extra fluid builds up, adding to the load the veins must handle.
- Genetic and hormonal factors: Both lipedema and venous insufficiency are more common in women and tend to worsen with hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.
The result?
You might feel more heaviness, pain, and swelling — especially by the end of the day.
🌿 Signs You Might Have Both
It’s not always easy to tell what’s causing what, but these clues can help you and your provider figure it out:
- Persistent swelling that doesn’t go away overnight
- Achy or throbbing pain when standing
- Veins that look bulgy or twisted
- Skin discoloration around the ankles or calves
- Lipedema pain that feels worse after long periods of sitting or standing
If these sound familiar, it’s worth asking your doctor for a venous ultrasound to check how your veins are functioning.
💪 What You Can Do to Support Your Vein Health
Even if you have lipedema and some degree of venous insufficiency, there’s a lot you can do to protect your circulation and reduce discomfort:
✅ Move your body often. Gentle movement like walking, swimming, or rebounding helps pump blood and lymph fluid upward.
✅ Elevate your legs. Prop your legs up on a pillow or wall for 10–15 minutes a few times a day to encourage drainage.
✅ Wear compression. Medical-grade compression garments or wraps can help support both the veins and lymphatic system (just make sure they’re fitted correctly).
✅ Prioritize anti-inflammatory nutrition. Reducing inflammation helps protect your vessels and tissues. Focus on whole foods, healthy fats, and avoiding processed, high-sugar items.
✅ Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). This gentle therapy helps relieve swelling and supports both lymph and venous flow.
✅ Stay consistent. Little daily habits — like hydration, movement, and mindful self-care — can make a big difference over time.
💜 The Bottom Line
Venous insufficiency and lipedema often go hand in hand — but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Understanding what’s happening beneath the surface gives you the tools to take action.
By combining medical support, gentle movement, proper compression, and anti-inflammatory living, you can improve your circulation, reduce discomfort, and protect your legs for the long haul.
Remember: it’s not just about managing symptoms — it’s about reclaiming comfort, mobility, and confidence in your body again. 💪
